The story behind this piece

I've always been drawn to Orthodox icon painting — the flat gold, the frozen posture, the way a face is meant to be looked at rather than looked into. I wanted to keep that structure and let something go wrong inside it. The halo stays. The rider doesn't quite belong to it.
